At the same time, independent outage reports and Microsoft’s broader Microsoft 365 service-health data show ongoing reports of problems affecting Microsoft services, including Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat.
Microsoft Copilot outage reported
The reported Copilot disruption began at approximately 13:50 UTC on September 17, 2026, or 7:20 PM IST.
Users affected by the problem can access Copilot and enter prompts normally, but the service fails to return an answer. Instead, Copilot displays:
“I’m sorry, I’m having trouble responding to requests right now. Let’s try this again in a bit.”
The error shown in the screenshot reviewed by The CyberSec Guru is particularly notable because the Copilot frontend remains operational.
The conversation interface loads, the user’s message appears in the chat, and Copilot’s normal controls remain visible. The failure occurs when the service attempts to produce the response.
This points toward a problem occurring somewhere after the initial request reaches Copilot, although the available information does not identify the specific backend component responsible.

Copilot interface remains accessible
Unlike a complete website outage, the reported problem does not necessarily prevent users from opening Copilot.

A failure at any of several stages can ultimately result in the same generic message shown to the user.
For that reason, the current error does not establish that Microsoft’s underlying AI models are unavailable.
Microsoft has not confirmed the reported outage
Microsoft’s public Copilot status page currently says “All Systems Operational” and lists no incident for September 17.
That conflicts with the user reports being tracked for this incident.
Third-party monitoring currently shows individual Copilot reports, including reports categorized as “Inaccessible” and “Error Received.” Down for Everyone or Just Me recorded reports from users in India and the United States on September 17. However, its current detection system does not classify Copilot as experiencing a broad outage.
Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat is also receiving user-submitted error reports. StatusGator currently lists error messages, service-down reports and slow performance among reported problems for Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat.
These reports provide evidence that users are encountering problems, but they do not establish the root cause or prove that all Copilot users are affected.
Microsoft 365 already has active Copilot-related issues
The reported outage comes while Microsoft’s broader Microsoft 365 environment is dealing with several service-health issues.
Microsoft’s service communications data currently identifies an active incident, CW1470765, involving Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. Some users may not have their Exchange Online email messages retrieved when prompting Copilot Chat. (Earlham Status)
The issue is related specifically to Copilot’s ability to retrieve Exchange Online data and is separate from the generic response failure reported in this article.

There is currently no evidence that these incidents share the same root cause as the reported 13:50 UTC Copilot disruption.
That distinction is important because Microsoft’s Copilot products rely on numerous backend services, and separate service-health incidents can occur simultaneously.
Recent Microsoft 365 Copilot outage provides additional context
Microsoft has experienced a separate Copilot incident in recent days.
Microsoft’s incident records show that CP1470554 affected Microsoft 365 Copilot between 23:45 UTC on September 10 and 06:16 UTC on September 11. Users were reportedly unable to access Copilot or encountered problems interacting with the service. Microsoft subsequently published a post-incident report.
That incident should not be confused with the outage reported on September 17.
The existence of the earlier incident does, however, demonstrate that Copilot can experience service disruptions where the user-facing symptoms involve failed access or failed interactions rather than the entire Microsoft 365 platform becoming unavailable.
Is this a global Microsoft Copilot outage?
The available evidence supports a reported disruption affecting some Copilot users, but Microsoft’s public status page does not currently show a corresponding incident.
Third-party monitoring is also not currently classifying Copilot as being in a broad outage state. Down for Everyone or Just Me currently says it is not detecting a general Copilot outage, despite individual reports.
This could mean the incident is:
- affecting a subset of users;
- limited to a particular region;
- affecting a specific Copilot backend;
- intermittent;
- affecting a particular account or product tier;
- or still being investigated by Microsoft.

How users can check whether Copilot is affected
Users encountering the error can perform a few basic tests.
First, send a simple prompt such as:

If Copilot fails even on a basic request, the problem is unlikely to be caused by the complexity of the original prompt.
Users can then try opening Copilot in an Incognito or InPrivate window, or switch to another browser. This can eliminate browser extensions, stale cookies and local session problems.
Testing another network can also help distinguish a local connectivity issue from a service-side problem.
If Copilot fails consistently across multiple browsers, devices and networks, the problem is less likely to be isolated to the user’s machine.
Microsoft 365 administrators should also check the Microsoft 365 admin center → Health → Service health dashboard for tenant-specific information.
