The one app you thought was safe from the “sponsored” apocalypse has officially fallen.
After years of “will they, won’t they” rumors, Meta has begun a global rollout of advertisements on WhatsApp, fundamentally changing the clean, ad-free experience users have enjoyed for over a decade.
If you opened your “Updates” tab this morning and felt like you were on Instagram, you aren’t crazy. You’re just part of the new monetization wave.
Where Are the Ads Appearing?
Don’t panic—your private group chat with your mom is still safe (for now).
The ads are currently restricted to the Updates Tab, which houses:
- Status: Just like Instagram Stories, you will now see full-screen sponsored video or image ads sandwiched between your friends’ status updates.
- Channels: If you follow broadcast channels (like news outlets or celebrities), expect to see “Promoted” posts and sponsored blocks appearing in the feed.

The “Slippery Slope” Fear
Meta has promised that these ads use “basic targeting” (like your city and language) and do not read your encrypted messages.
“We want to be clear: Your personal messages are off-limits,” a Meta spokesperson stated.
However, the internet isn’t buying it. Social media is already lighting up with users threatening to switch to Signal or Telegram. The fear isn’t just about seeing a shoe ad; it’s about the erosion of WhatsApp’s core identity as a private, utility-first utility.
Why Now?
Money. With over 3 billion users, WhatsApp was the largest untapped advertising real estate on the planet. Analysts estimate this move could generate billions in revenue for Meta in 2026 alone.
Can You Turn Them Off?
Bad news: No. Just like Instagram or Facebook, there is no “opt-out” button for ads in the Status feed. Good news: You can simply not use the Updates tab. If you stick to the “Chats” and “Calls” tabs, your experience remains (mostly) unchanged.
The Verdict: The “golden era” of a completely free, ad-less WhatsApp is officially over. The only question now is: will they eventually cross the line into our chats?
Status: Rolling out globally on iOS and Android starting this week.
