Understanding Parity

Understanding the Math Behind CRC

  3. Polynomial Division: Now, treat the augmented data as a long binary number and perform a modulo-2 division (a special division where we focus on remainders, not quotients) using the generator polynomial (‘1011’) as the divisor. For illustrative purposes, I’ll show this as a traditional long division process, but keep in mind specialized implementations use more efficient shift-register based circuits.

Example’s Power: Our small example uses a CRC polynomial just 3 bits long. Real-world CRCs use much larger polynomials, resulting in checksums often 16 or 32 bits long. A longer checksum greatly reduces the chances that random errors go undetected – the mathematics behind this gets fascinating!

Important Notes:

  • Modulo-2 Arithmetic: It’s worth looking up and understanding modulo-2 arithmetic if it’s unfamiliar. Operations like XOR come into play when performing the subtraction part of this special division.

Mismatch! We obtain ’10’ as a remainder, instead of the ‘100’ that was originally sent. The disagreement between the transmitted CRC and the recalculated CRC decisively implies corruption occurred during transmission.

Why this works

CRC is carefully designed so that common corruption patterns (single-bit flips, burst errors) are very likely to alter the remainder. Key insights:

  • The remainder of a polynomial division depends on all of the bits involved. Therefore, any change to the input data is bound to cause variation in the final remainder, barring extremely exceptional coincidences.
  • Due to the mathematical properties of the selected generator polynomials, changes aren’t just detectable, but are highly distinguishable across many possible error combinations. This increases the likelihood that only a true fault would cause a mismatch, not merely a quirk of the data itself.

Limitations

CRC isn’t foolproof. If multiple bits flip in specific patterns, they might conspire to generate the same original CRC again (a false negative). But the probability of this gets vanishingly small with longer CRC checksums and well-chosen generator polynomials. That’s why CRCs are exceptionally potent at detecting common error scenarios even in highly noisy environments.

Hamming Code

Richard Hamming revolutionized error control with his eponymous code. Beyond mere detection, Hamming Code possesses the remarkable ability to automatically correct single-bit errors within a data unit. This is achieved by cleverly interspersing special parity bits at certain calculated positions within the data. The redundancy encoded in this intricate ‘parity mesh’ empowers receivers to not only pinpoint errors with high likelihood but also reverse them!

To automatically correct errors, we need more than just a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ flag from error detection. Hamming Codes cleverly embed parity bits throughout the data that generate parity equations to pinpoint (and later undo) single-bit errors. Here’s a breakdown:

  1. Calculating Parity Bits: With any Hamming Code, we begin by determining how many parity bits (p) to add to a bit sequence of data (d).Here’s the essential formula: 2^p >= p + d + 1Let’s say we have 4 bits of data (d=4). We find that with 3 parity bits (p=3), the above formula holds true. So, we’ll have a combination of 3 parity bits interspersed within our 4 data bits.
  2. Parity Bit Placement: Importantly, the location of these parity bits is not arbitrary. Parity bits are positioned at powers of 2 (1, 2, 4, 8, etc.). This gives us a Hamming Code block of length 7 (3 parity + 4 data bits).
  3. Calculating Parity Values: Each parity bit’s value is set to create either odd or even parity over a specific subset of the data bits.
    • Parity bit 1 (P1): Calculates parity across bit positions 3, 5, and 7.
    • Parity bit 2 (P2): Calculates parity across bit positions 3, 6, and 7.

  1. Segmentation: The file is first broken down into smaller data units called frames.

The Cost of Pausing

  • Propagation Delay: Time taken for the frame to travel from sender to receiver, and for the ACK/NAK to travel back. During this time, the sender sits idle.
  • Transmission Time: The actual duration it takes to place a frame’s bits on the wire. Longer frames take proportionally longer to transmit.
  • Processing Delays: Non-zero time required for the receiver to process the frame, generate ACK/NAK, and similarly for the sender to process the response.

Visualizing the Issue

Think of it like filling a bucket with water with periodic gaps.

On channels with exceptionally low error rates, these ‘forced pauses’ are particularly painful. Every single frame of data could reliably traverse the network, yet the protocol prevents continuous flow, significantly underutilizing available bandwidth.

Solutions

Protocols like Go-Back-N, Selective Repeat ARQ, and the Sliding Window concept attempt to reduce inactivity while ensuring reliable data transfer, especially in environments with non-negligible error rates.

  4. Go-Back-N in Action: The sender doesn’t only retransmit frame 3. It must retransmit frames 3, and 4 even though frame 4 might have reached successfully.
  5. Restart from Error Point: The receiver, having already received a duplicate frame 4, discards it, ensuring data order within the reassembled information.

Why “Go-Back-N”: The sending process steps ‘back’ to the point of failure and continues from there.

Selective Repeat ARQ Example

Let’s use the same setup, but the receiver will have more intelligence:

  1. Lost Frame & Buffering: The same scenario unfolds, frame 3 is lost. However, the receiver correctly receives frame 4
  2. Selective Buffering: The receiver temporarily stores frame 4 while still sending ACKs for frames 1 and 2.
  3. Timeout & Specific Request: The sender’s timer specifically for frame 3 expires. Instead of retransmitting everything, it selectively retransmits only frame 3.
  4. Order Preservation: The receiver now has all frames from 1 to 4 and can deliver the data in the correct sequence.

Efficiency Comparison

  • Stop-and-Wait: Every single frame waits for its acknowledgment. Large wait periods accumulate even with few errors.
  • Go-Back-N: More efficient – allows continuous transmission if everything goes well. Errors impact multiple frames in terms of retransmission.
  • Selective Repeat: Reduces the extent of retransmissions when facing isolated errors, further enhancing efficiency.

Important Notes:

  • Buffers: Selective Repeat implies both sender and receiver must have the ability to temporarily store out-of-order frames while retransmission resolves issue.
